Innovations as part of scientific meeting
The 19th annual meeting of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, themed "innovation-driven prosperity" was held in Changchun, Jilin province, on June 24, during which 184 products involving aspects such as aerospace, biomedicine, and railway traffic were discussed and displayed.
Basalt fiber material
Basalt is widely distributed in Changbai Mountain areas in Jilin province. The rock is formed from cooled magma and fiber materials made of the rock can resist high temperatures, corrosion, and have improved longevity.
Xu Kaiqiang, basalt researcher at Jilin University, introduced that the fiber materials could be made into the bearing spring on automobiles and could be vital for reducing vibrations.
"Meanwhile, the heavy weight and the perishable nature of steel springs can be solved by installing basalt fiber ones," Xu added.
Paper that can wrap fire
A type of fire-proof paper was invented by the nanometer material research team at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Dong Liying, a researcher on the team, explained that "such paper can never catch on fire because of its heat-insulating property."
"The product can replace the rubber outer sheath of a cable which would melt when the temperature reaches between 800 to 1,000 degrees centigrade."
